The first rumours of an upcoming DJI Air 3 are now doing the rounds in the community. Shortly after, the first alleged photos and a short video of the very popular Air series from DJI followed. We summarise the details so far.

With the DJI Air 2S, DJI released an extremely popular mid-range drone almost exactly 2 years ago, which cleverly positioned itself between the Mini and Mavic series. Recent leaks suggest that its successor, the DJI Air 3, is about to be released. First leaks in the form of possible technical data as well as photos and videos show in which direction it could probably go as early as next month.

Camera and optics of the DJI Air 3

A likely highlight of the DJI Air 3 is the introduction of a new telephoto lens, similar to the one we recently saw on the DJI Mavic 3 Pro. The DJI Air 2S currently only has a single camera with a 1-inch 20MP CMOS sensor. According to popular DJI leaker @Quadro_News, the DJI Air 3 will get either a 1/1.3-inch medium telephoto lens with an effective 3x zoom (like the Mavic 3 Pro) or a 1/2-inch telephoto lens with an effective 7x zoom.

Recent leaks support these rumours with images and videos showing that the drone has a large camera module to make room for the extra lens

Performance and price of the DJI Air 3

The introduction of an additional lens on the DJI Air 3 would also make sense in the context of DJI’s current offering and give aerial photographers a reason to choose the new drone over the smaller and otherwise excellent DJI Mini 3 Pro.

Another leaked detail about the DJI Air 3 is an alleged battery life of 30 minutes, which would make the flight time almost identical to the DJI Air 2S. With an expected release in late June or early July 2023, we are likely to see more leaks and details very soon.

A possible disadvantage of the new lens and the improved specifications of the DJI Air 3 could be a higher price. Rumours point to a price of around 7,500 yuan, which is equivalent to around €987 after direct conversion. As always, you still have to take into account the different tax rates when doing a simple conversion.

More improvements to the DJI Air 3

If the DJI Air 3 introduces an additional telephoto lens alongside other improvements such as Ocusync 3.0 Plus transmission and improved video options, it could once again take its place at the top of the upper mid-range. The Air series has always been a good middle ground between DJI’s Mini series and the Mavic series, whose prices are hard to justify for most semi-professional drone pilots.

Improved battery life for the DJI Air 3 would certainly have been nice to see, but previous rumours suggest this is unlikely. A leaked photo seems to confirm this theory by showing a stack of spare DJI batteries.
